Neville Longbottom

We start this chapter with Malfoy relentlessly bullying Neville.
  • Is this an accurate portrayal of bullying in schools?
  • Do you think Hogwarts has school counselors?
  • If so, where are they and why haven’t they implemented a school-wide anti-bullying campaign?

In this chapter, we learn that Neville’s Gran sent him a Remembrall. While this may seem thoughtful on the surface, it also serves as a reminder that he is forgetful (i.e. not good enough). We also know that his uncle threw him off a pier and accidentally dropped him out of a window in attempts to see if he had magical ability.
  • Neville’s family is seemingly always trying to push him to be more than he is instead of letting his light shine through. How do you think this affects Neville’s self-worth?
  • This is also a pretty awful chapter for Neville in that he gets nervous, takes off early during flying lessons, and breaks his wrist. Why do you think bad things are always happening to Neville?
