Gender Roles

Post by Admin on Sat Nov 07, 2015 5:47 pm

When Harry first meets Hagrid, we see Hagrid knitting what looks like a canary yellow circus tent. In this chapter, Hagrid is seen sobbing when he has to say goodbye to Norbert and referring to himself as "Mummy." Hagrid has now been portrayed as crying more than any other character in the book.
  • In what ways is Hagrid effeminized throughout the series?
  • What can we learn about gender roles in the wizarding world from Hagrid?
  • How do you think Hagrid's upbringing, loss of his father, and expulsion from Hogwarts have affected the way he sees gender roles?
  • Is there a bit of gender-bending going on here?
